OrangeCone is the first product developed by 38 North LLC.

OrangeCone is a mobile- and web-application that will allow a Citizen to report a public-sector issue or need by taking a picture of it, identifying the issue type, and writing comments.
This data will be visible to all users in that geographic location to view for free in a Newsfeed and Map-based portion of the application, and maintain complete awareness of their public spaces via a location-appropriate TweetDeck of public and governmental sources.

1. ORANGECONE IS ONE APP FOR EVERY PUBLIC SPACE. No more having one app for every city you encounter.
2. NO DATA SILOS: We take data out of silos and put it into one big pool. This allows one reported issue data point to be useful across multiple governmental levels – from local, to state and federal.
3. STANDARDIZED DATA COLLECTION AND REPORTING: this allows ease of reporting issues in G2G, and ease of interpretation of data trends.
4. ORANGECONE GIVES CITIZENS A VOICE ABOUT THEIR PUBLIC SPACES, eliminating the confusion of who is responsible for what spaces and creating a conversation about where we live, and how to improve it.

OrangeCone is a web and mobile application with a functional MVP. The mobile app will be for free use by any US Citizen (and eventually Global citizen), enabling anyone to report non-emergency public-sector issues to appropriate governmental and other authorities.

Free users will be able to (1) report issues of concern in the local area, and (2) view the issues reported in their local area in a map and newsfeed for free.
Practically, a Citizen will be able to (1) take a picture of an identified public sector issue, (2) select the issue type from a drop down menu ("Streets and Sidewalks", "Environmental", etc.), and (3) add optional comments if they would like.

Subscribing Users, such as local government agencies, will be able to (1) view data in a map and newsfeed, as well as (2) manage issue fulfillment via an issue management system, and (3) view real-time issue management and trend analysis with data analytics / business intelligence tools, in order to enable communication, collaboration, data sharing, and more rapid public space issue resolution.

To whom it may concern,

I am David Zipper, Managing Director at 1776. I am writing in reference to OrangeCone’s application to Techstars. Founder Danny Martin has been a member at 1776, a global incubator for startups ready to tackle the world’s most important challenges, for about 5 months.

Through Danny’s 1776 membership, we’ve seen OrangeCone engage with mentors, take classes and work to progress through early stage startup challenges. He has consistently received positive feedback and our mentors have found him to be open to feedback, organized and focused.

Based on our work with Danny, we believe that OrangeCone would benefit from acceptance to TechStars.

Thanks for your time,
David

I am honored to lend my support to Danny Martin and OrangeCone. As the former Director of the DC Dept. of Transportation (DDOT), GM of the DC Metro subway and bus systems, and DC City Administrator (among other roles), I have come to realize that the government-public interface needs work. This political season shows what years of distrust and disconnection between government and the people produces: cynicism, coarseness and anger. This can be reversed! A strong connection between agencies and their customers at the community level can do this. OrangeCone is a brick in the foundation of rebuilding trust in government, enabling people to come together to build something bigger than what can be done alone. Cities, towns and communities are the result of collective action, shared investment and cooperation. Orange Cone appeals to our democratic principles and enlists public voices to challenge public agencies to action, which in my experience, creates an incentive for agencies to perform.

I’ve only known Danny for a short time, but he’s shown a real command of the public sphere, the sales and budget dynamics of local governments, and an ability to get things done. He’s also built a solid team with relevant backgrounds, aligned around a mission I can identify with. Together they have a real shot at making an impact in a tough market.

I went to business school with Danny and know him well. He is a hard worker, honest, and he understands the public space. His background and work ethic are strengths that continue to drive his success.
