We Accelerating Appalachia connects post-revenue growth stage “nature-based businesses” from rural and urban hubs to help expand their customer base, supply chains, peer, mentor and investor network. We help them develop their triple bottom line of people, planet and profit with training in business development, holistic management and inclusion/equity. We are especially interested in businesses committed to good land-use practices: good land use (regenerative) not only brings nutrition back to our food, but improves air and water quality, and sequesters carbon. If your businesses is supporting multiple small farmers and growers, we want to hear from you.
Our founder came up with the expression “nature-based business” in 2012 to reach businesses that respect nature’s design and launched the world’s first “nature-based accelerator”. Nature-based businesses and entrepreneurs from across the globe, but especially from the southeastern U.S., in the following sectors are encouraged to apply:
- Craft Beverage
- Forest products (natural building) and non-timber forest products (ginseng, mushrooms, fruit & nut trees)
- Outdoor Industry
- Soil and water health innovations
We will consider other innovative triple bottom-line businesses with special consideration for entrepreneurs where mining, logging, textile and tobacco/farming industries are on the decline. We also encourage women, minorities and veterans to apply.
Central Appalachia is on the same latitude and elevation as China’s ayurvedic regions and is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world. With over 1,500 heirloom seeds under cultivation, Central Appalachia is North America’s most diverse foodshed. The abundance of our region supported the mining, timber, textile and tobacco industries, but they are all in decline. We seek to help rebuild more diverse economies through businesses that create good jobs, honor nature and especially those that support small farmers.
Accelerator graduates have leveraged over $12 million in investment
60% of our businesses are in growth
