The business was established by Prof Graham Bonwick and Dr Catherine Birch. The primary reason was the perceived need to translate research into the exploitation of agri-food by-products (AFBPs) into commercial products, as part of the move to a circular bioeconomy. Opportunities were also identified relating to the provision of consultancy, applied research and testing services required to support the growth of the sector such as safety, quality and performance evaluation. The goal of the business is to be recognised as a leader in the research, development and evaluation of materials derived from AFBPs for the production of new functional foods, supplements, sustainable bio-based packaging and single use items.

The business activities include provision of consultancy and research into the exploitation of AFBPs and other materials for the development of functional food products and supplements. Similarly, these services can be provided to establish the availability, performance and safety of bio-based food packaging. A range of laboratory-based services that can be provided include:

• Rapid analysis of food and feed for allergens and contaminants
• Nutritional analysis and shelf life testing
• AFBP processing and extraction of bioactive compounds or other materials, in vitro bioactivity screening
• Bioaccessibility and bioavailability of bioactive ingredients following incorporation in functional foods or supplements.
• In vitro screening of bio-based packaging biosafety
• Processing of AFBPs for the production of bioactives for use in supplements and food, as well as biodegradable bio-based packaging.

The business actively aims to develop partnerships with other businesses and research organisations and participates in consortia to pursue funding for research and innovation. Outreach activities include participation in science communication coordinated events and reflects the extensive experience of the founders in this area.
