Due to an aging baby boomer population, the US will experience a shortage of 122,000 physicians by 2032 (AAMC). Combined with the retirement of 1 million nurses by 2030 (AANC), there will be significant strain placed on an already stressed U.S. healthcare system. The shortages of providers combined with inefficiencies in traditional medical staffing practices are costing hospitals millions of dollars and countless lives. Each time a community hospital closes, the average death rate increases by 6% in that area. To date, 110+ hospitals have shut their doors over the past ten years, and an additional 700+ are at risk for closure. By utilizing part-time medical staffing, known as Moonlighting, hospitals are able to keep the doors open, generate more revenue, and improve patient outcomes. Unfortunately, this practice has been hindered by legacy staffing companies who act as middlemen, signing exclusive contracts with hospitals, and hiding available jobs from willing moonlighters.
