In the future, autonomous robotic surgery will be a common practice. Current robotic surgery is still controlled by surgeons; thus it can be considered as machines rather than robots. The missing elements for a truly robotic surgery system are:

The ViZOR is a platform to enable the development of a smart surgical system. It is a wearable augmented reality head-mounted-display, comprised of multiple sensors that collect information during the surgery and then process it using machine learning algorithms. The ViZOR will provide the surgeon valuable information during the procedure and strengthen the confidence in using computer assisted surgery system, while in the background, the system will collect big surgical data to analyze. In time, the ViZOR will be able to make suggestions or warn the surgeon when needed, and in the future, the system will be smarter and more potent than a human surgeon until eventually human surgeons will be redundant.

The ViZOR comprises various sensors which track the position of the surgeon's head, patient, and surgical instruments. The ViZOR calculates the position of the surgeon's eyes relative to the patient and the surgical instruments, and projects a 3D visualization of the patient's anatomy in the correct perspective of the surgeon. Augmedics has developed a patent pending cutting-edge technology which allows the combination of optic-based augmented reality with video-based augmented reality on a single see-through display.
