Ausbildung mit VR / Training with VR promotes the use of modern technology for the qualification of employees and volunteers at the German Red Cross (DRK) for the well-being of the people entrusted to us.

The aim of the project is to provide VR supported training and further education for volunteer paramedics at the DRK to be more modern and flexible and at the same time enables participant-oriented, time- and location-independent digital lifelong learning.

Training with VR solves several relevant problems at once. The majority of paramedics at the DRK are volunteers. The volunteers at the DRK are people who spend their free time with people who are in need and whom they usually do not even know. The people who volunteer at the DRK do not spend much time with their families and friends. The use of VR makes learning possible regardless of time and place. The people who volunteer at the DRK do not spend much time with their families and friends. The use of VR makes learning possible regardless of time and place. This makes the training and further education of volunteers much more flexible and above all more efficient (journeys to and from the DRK accommodation can be omitted). With this project, we are strengthening volunteering at the DRK. We give the volunteers time back - for their families and friends. The honorary office in the medical and rescue service is a very high civil society good. Without a functioning and motivated honorary office in the medical and rescue service, our society would standstill. No event - street festivals, sports events, concerts, etc. - without the assistance of ambulance and rescue services. This also includes the self-evident reactions to emergency calls, which are fulfilled in Germany, for the most part also by volunteers (rescue services and fire brigades).

The RTW (ambulance) simulator is highly efficient since vehicles no longer have to be withdrawn from missions for essential training units and the people being trained can learn independently of time and place. All vehicles (RTWs) in operation increase civil society safety and the RTW Simulator saves costs and protects the environment, e.g. by eliminating the need to travel to and from the training location. The volunteers in the ambulance and rescue service receive attractive and up-to-date support through virtual learning spaces. This motivates those who are already involved and also inspires the people who have not yet decided to volunteer in the ambulance and rescue service. The competition for new talents is fierce and virtual reality is not only an entertainment factor but also a competitive advantage.

As the leading manufacturer of virtual reality technology, we at HTC are proudly supporting DRK in this initiative by providing it with Vive Focus Plus headsets. With the project “Training with VR“, DRK showcases the potential of virtual reality technology for practical education.
It offers highly efficient trainings specifically tailored to the application case – thus enabling more people to participate in trainings at a lower cost, independent of time and place. This is especially important in the emergency service, which is relying on volunteers.

This project makes a valuable contribution for the education of paramedics and has the potential to let a large amount of people participate in crucial rescue trainings.

Studio Oh supports training with VR with photo and video production and documentation during the production of VR content. We find it very inspiring that the volunteers will enrich their training with virtual reality in the future and that the volunteers are also involved in the production process of VR content. It has been our first direct experience with virtual reality and it is very impressive to see the results live. We already had the chance to test the beta version of the ambulance simulator. A very intuitive virtual learning environment.

digital.engagiert (www.digitalengagiert.de) is a support initiative of Amazon and Stifterverband. It supports digital civil society projects, this year with a focus on education. Our jury has selected the DRK section Herford's engagement for training first responders by leveraging the potential of VR, out of nearly 150 nationwide applicant projects.

The two sides of the coin where digitization is about to radically change our education systems are: digital learning, and learning digital.

The DRK team's idea has the potential to boost paramedics' continued training and learning (in a lifestyle-compatible, up-to-date and immersive manner); to make volunteering in this literally lifesaving field of civil society more attractive for young and old; and - in the process - to strengthen digital literacy and future skills of those involved (beyond textbook-scripts, with a clear use case and a purpose that truly matters).

We at Leica Geosystems are very proud to support the German Red Cross (DRK) on a project that improves their paramedic volunteer training experience using VR technology.

DRK used our BLK360 imaging laser scanner to create a standardized VR training model of the interior of their ambulances. Thanks to its portability and ease of use, the BLK360 can be used to scan any interior or exterior area, even by those who have not had any experience with laser scanning technology before. DRK’s use of a VR training experience has led to better training and a renewed enthusiasm for volunteer work, which has had a positive impact in their communities.

We are extremely honored to be part of this initiative and to contribute to the broader mission of DRK to assist those most in need of help.

I had the privilege to be on site when VR content was produced and could try the beta version of the rescue vehicle (RTW) simulator. This is a brilliant way to support volunteer paramedics that daily invest their time and compassion for all of us. What I love is that the volunteers are also trained to produce VR content with 180° / 360° and 3D filming. Excellent!
