BATCH : Online Connectivity Portal

Batch is an online portal (initially, a website) that connects Europe's breweries with sources of surplus bread (bakeries, supermarkets, sandwich producers, restaurants) and allows them to order surplus bread online that they can use to replace grain and brew beer.

In future, the platform will also connect breweries with farmers and other organisations so that the spent grain from each bread brew can be upcycled and used for food products, animal feed and biofuel.

The E.U. produces 400 million hectolitres of beer annually. To brew this beer it takes 9.6 million tonnes of malted barley harvested over almost 3.5 million hectares of land. And that’s just barley - millions of tonnes of wheat, rice and other grains are used for brewing too!

In the UK alone we waste almost 900,000 tonnes of bread every year. This bread can be used to replace malted barley to make beer, reducing waste.

The E.U. produces 400 million hectolitres of beer annually.

Toast Ale Ltd. have already brewed almost 250,000 litres of bread beer, saving almost 20,000 kilos of surplus fresh bread from going to waste. We want as many other breweries as possible to be doing the same. We have already organised locally-focused, charity-supporting collaboration brews with a dozen other breweries and aim to double that number by the end of 2018, supported by the BATCH connectivity portal.

In 2019, we will target 30-50 collaboration brews across the UK, leveraging the power of the BATCH portal to make the collaboration process as smooth and efficient as possible, increasing our capacity to empower more and more breweries and bakeries to work with us to brew awesome beer, reduce bread waste and raise money to support local food waste charities.

Starting in 2019 with the UK, home to over 2,000 breweries and 5,000 bakeries, the BATCH connectivity portal will begin linking all breweries and all sources of surplus bread, saving breweries money on their grain bill and slicing bakeries’ levels of food waste. By 2023 we are determined that 10% of UK breweries will have brewed in collaboration with BATCH via our online connectivity portal, and that’s just the start…

We believe that beer can be the solution to the massive global issue of bread waste. In the future, our online portal will connect any brewery with a source of surplus bread for brewing and the ‘BATCH’ seal of approval will indicate to suppliers, organisations and consumers that a brewery or bakery is committed to fighting the global issue of food waste.
