Transitioning from research and development to successful applications must overcome challenges such as the lack of awareness by end users of these technologies, and often unproven cost benefits of remote sensing data.
At BitsOfData we promote the use of remote sensing and its specific processing algorithms in everyday applications. We hereby focus on the transfer of remote sensing technologies (e.g. feature detection in camera’s uses algorithms developed for satellite image classification) and the use of remote sensing data in new applications (e.g. remote sensors enable algorithms to interpret a field’s environment as statistical data that can be understood and useful for decision-making).
We focus on different tiers:
- collection, processing and analysis of drone data
- land monitoring with a focus on vegetation monitoring and change detection
- 3D modelling and analysis with a focus on 3D obstacle detection
- object detection and recognition in images

BitsOfData has executed multiple projects with a focus on land monitoring, more specific 3-dimensional monitoring of land cover near critical infrastructure. An example project is the inventory of the Right-of-Way near a pipeline network for industrial gases. The inventory needed to show all trees and structures on a GIS layer in order to make a detailed assessment of the potential hazardous influences on the pipeline.
BitsOfData is also experienced in the acquisition and processing of 3D and drone-data. In the frame of the control of critical infrastructure, we performed a 3D obstacle detection around the military airport of Koksijde to ensure that objects are not located within the Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS) of the aerodrome. The objectives of the OLS are to define the airspace around aerodromes to be maintained free of obstacles so as to permit the intended aeroplane operations at the aerodromes to be conducted safely.
