My name is Wunmi Fowora and I am an entertainer, producer, owner of AMO Organizing Solutions, LLC and founder of the nonprofit Black HMU United.

I have recently made Theatre Civil Rights History writing a resolution that was recently passed at Actors Equity Association (AEA) national convention, which protects over 51,000 actors and stage managers, ensuring Black equity in hair and makeup departments must be the standard in union run productions. I am currently working with SAG-AFTRA (the tv & film union) to ensure this language exists too.

I started Black HMU United so that entertainment unions could work with my nonprofit to vet the competency and expertise of hair & makeup stylists around the country that they are capable of providing safe working conditions for especially Black performers. We are creating a robust database and providing educational resources for our community at large.

Building this national database and educational institution for professionals in hair and makeup will ensure the abhorrent situations of wage theft (the performers executing the labor themselves), hair loss, lesions and more due to incompetent hair and makeup stylists working on Black performers will be completely eradicated. We are currently in the startup, prototype phase and are already getting a positive response from producers and other potential employers who’d like to utilize our org’s vetting & recruitment resources!

Outside of my nonprofit, Black HMU United, there is no other organization doing this work. The robust level of vetting, continued education, and amount of technology needed to currently accommodate the safety and serve tens of thousands of people and soon to be hundreds of thousands hopefully later this year will be immense and just having a bit of help to get this work off the ground by myself is no easy feat. We now have UI/UX designers, developers & vetters working around the clock to make this happen. And the money the org abstains will be be pay for labor and resources costs.
