Hey everyone, I'm really excited about this opportunity in Hawaii for all of us. I know all of you are working hard on your startups so I wanted to share some results from a recent Indiegogo campaign I ran for my BruxRelief device (http://teethgrindingbruxism.com). This was my very first crowdfunding campaign and ultimately I didn't succeed in reaching my goal budget but I learned a LOT from the process, MOST important to you is I've figured out a couple ways to HACK crowdfunding platforms' promotion algorithm to get more traffic to your campaign and more contributions. I think each contribution and especially the sales you make of people contributing to receive your device or service helps reduce investor risk and shows a level of traction the investor can have confidence in. So, to hack Kickstarter or Indiegogo, just realize the very first day is your most important. Algorithms seem to favor Backer Count over % of Funds raised BUT % of funds raised becomes increasingly important as the days roll on. WHY? because of psychology. I'd shoot for 50 to 60 backers on the first day, this will get you promoted for sure, but within the first 3 to 5 days you should hit above 25% funding. The 50 to 60 backers on the first day seem to get locked in as your Backers Per Day Ratio, so that's what makes that first day so important. Next here's where the psychology comes in. Once the campaign gets promoted, organic traffic, community members finding your campaign are WAY WAY more likely to contribute if they see 25% or hopefully above... Social Proof, people like to know their decisions are the right ones so we look to others to know that a purchase or contribution is safe, especially in crowds! If Indiegogo or Kickstarter start promoting your offer but it's not converting, not getting more contributions they will demote your campaign and stop promoting it. So I recommend a bunch of backers on the first day and then try to get at least 25% within the first 2 days to take advantage of the promotion and psychological factors these platforms give you. One other hack, people can contribute multiple times! Each one of those contributions seem to get factored into your Backer Count/day separately, not as one. So you could theoretically if you have some friends you hit up a couple times to donate it will help you. Next, you can contribute to your own campaign and as far as I can tell it gets factored into your Backer Count and % funded... SO, use your own judgement here but theoretically you could HELP your campaign by personally contributing enough to get you to 25% funded or more. Now if you use this trick, just be aware of the fees Kickstarter or Indiegogo take from your campaign, and tax implications. If you contribute money to your own campaign be aware that you're going to some of that investment to the crowdfunding platforms fees, additionally, crowdfunding funds received are treated like regular income to the business. So technically that contribution you make is taxed, but your accountant can help you mitigate this by documenting adequate deductions as you build your business to offset the taxable income. NO MATTER WHAT, all this info, this hacking strategy won't guarantee your campaign will be successful but it will give you the very best chance to be successful. I unfortunately didn't know all these tricks when I started my campaign and figured them out in the process. I will relaunch my device on Kickstarter in the next few months so I'm looking forward to taking advantage of these tricks myself, hopefully some of you can benefit now. Lastly, let me say this again, even if you don't fully fund your campaign, if you can get promoted by Kickstarter or Indiegogo and make some organic sales (contributions) this definitely helps to give your idea or concept some traction and reduce investor risk..... One more thing, try to launch with Kickstarter, statistically MORE than 4X more campaigns get funded on KS over Indiegogo (KS 44% and Indiegogo only 9%). Let me know if I can help with any questions you have, I've also got a lot of experience in online marketing so if I can offer a pair of eyes for any one of you let me know. Best of luck everyone. more
