80% of India’s sewage flows into the environment, untreated—the leading cause of water pollution and health problems including mosquito breeding, drinking water contamination etc. Further, water shortage of 15-60% now affects 25 of India’s 32 largest cities and is quickly becoming a major crisis that is already leading to violence and discrimination. Lastly, over 500,000 people die in India, mostly children, from water borne diseases caused by water pollution.

BWC’s goals are to:
1. Treat and re-use wastewater, thereby increasing effective water supply.
2. Prevent release of untreated sewage into the environment to impact health and pollution.
3. Beautify Indian cities by having clean water bodies that also provide recreational opportunities.
4. Generate and sell other valuable by-products including organic compost and biogas.

Our vision is to have clean, beautiful water bodies that improve the health, quality of life and recreational opportunities for urban Indians.

BWC has 3 products / services:

First, we design, build, operate and where needed, finance, good quality wastewater treatment plants using very low cost, environmentally friendly technologies that use no electricity or chemicals. The treated water will be sold at very competitive prices, profitably, for “non-human-contract” applications—industry, gardening, agriculture, flushing etc, thereby reducing use of freshwater. The customers will be large residential or commercial buildings, slum communities, campuses, industries, malls and city governments etc.

Second, we offer turnkey Faecal Sludge Management solutions to cities and towns, through Public Private Partnership Models where we will invest in the requisite town-scale infrastructure, and operate it under license from the Municipality for fees based on services delivered. This includes scheduled cleaning of septic tanks, operating cesspool vehicles, building and operating faecal sludge treatment plants and selling the treated compost and water.

Third is rainwater harvesting systems that increase effective water supply.

We have proven technology and have successfully managed several projects, and are developing our first commercial FSM project in Leh, Ladakh.

Further, we will work actively and extensively through partnerships with firms/NGOs that offer solid waste management services, or build traditional STPs, thereby quickly extending our reach and impact.

On behalf of BORDA I am happy and proud to be the first investor in the Blue Water Company.

This is a great opportunity: as the Indian sanitation market is emerging and taking shape we are happy to invest in Blue Water Company and supporting it actively to become successful and impactful in the large Indian market.

After more than 20 years experience in decentralized sanitation and faecal sludge management in India and other places, we know that it takes private businesses like the Blue Water Company to transform our cities to healthy, clean and thriving places. Blue Water Company will provide jobs, generate income and pay taxes!

Blue Water Company has a clear and very strong plan, robust technology and excellent partners. The company is lead by Manas Rath who has developed a deep experience with BORDA, an outstanding understanding of both the business environment, the technologies involved and the socio-political reality on the ground. He clearly has the drive it takes!

Given issues in India related to water shortages, and untreated sewage causing water pollution and water-borne diseases, there is the urgent need for entities to focus upon reducing water pollution and increased water availability by re-use of treated water.

This requires India-centric solutions of low-cost low-power environment-friendly wastewater treatment plants delivering treated water for re-use, and for decentralised Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) solutions.

Blue Water Company (BWC), with its vision to have clean, beautiful water bodies that improve the health, quality of life and recreational opportunities for urban Indians, is well suited to play a significant role in this area of national priority.

Tata Trusts have been associated with Manas Rath, CEO, and his associates on FSM, and on how public-private
partnership models could be leveraged to provide waste water solutions, using traditional or innovative technologies.

We are happy to recommend strongly the case for BWC.
