Travel can bring you so many good things: experiences, a break, social quality time...

Currently, 250.000 wheelchair users in the Netherlands (and millions abroad) are held back when they want to travel. Booking.com, TripAdvisor, ... none works for them.
They need check and verify hundreds of things before they dare to go. Their possibilities are perceived to be limited, the prices high, and they encounter many surprises when they go. That's why they go less often, less far away and many times to the same (dull) accommodations.

BookSpecials started in April 2015 by building a prototype to target this market: we are selling a few travel deals for wheelchair users (inspired by Travelbird). This deal includes a review of a wheelchair user that recommends this place, gives advise for restaurants and activities that are accessible. This way we try to inspire our customers, save them a lot of research effort and we can offer them a discount as well.

Our prototype works well. Customers are interested and are booking these travel deals. Based on our operations, we have two key learnings:
1) Demand and supply have a hard time to find each other: wheelchair users complain to us that they search for weeks & months; owners of adapted accommodations complain to us that they can’t find their customers (some have occupancy rates of <10%)
2) Limited amount of information is shared on the internet: you can hardly find reviews or recommendations from wheelchair users, there is no travel community for them

Based on these observations, we are currently developing two more prototypes (not live yet):
A) Booking site: to bring demand and supply together. This seems to be the biggest opportunity in the market with very limited competition. We are currently building a booking site for 15-20 holiday homes in the Netherlands, with the right information, pictures, search functionality and reviews from wheelchair users. We can easily scale this further up, also abroad.
B) Travel community: to enable wheelchair users to share their experiences in a structured and fun way. This way they help and inspire each other on a global scale. We are currently working with ~15 wheelchair users to document their experiences of Barcelona, Paris, Berlin and Vienna.

We expect substantial cross-sell between the deals, booking site and the travel community.

Let's change the travel world of wheelchair users together!
