Remote off grid communities have adopted solar power for energy production. Many of these communities are located adjacent to flowing rivers. Our small hydropower solution will provide baseload power through the use of a microgrid with battery backup.

A microgrid encompasses the whole system that provides electricity to the community; this includes diesel generators, distribution wires, and control systems, battery packs, plus any sources of renewable energy, such as wind, solar (photovoltaic), biomass combined heat and power, and small-scale hydro.

The original solution was developed in Germany and pilot projects have been executed in several countries, Nigeria, Peru, India, Indonesia, and Columbia.

The research for the portable solution is being carried out by the Canadian Hydrokinetic Turbine Test Center with the support of the National Research Council of Canada.

The next projects are planned for indigenous communities in Canada and off grid communities in Africa. The success of the projects will require the use of local service suppliers and eventually licensed manufacturers and /or assemblers.

The company started in late 2016 with the founder David Crombie.

In 2017 we added the capabilities of Dr. Eric Bibeau of the University of Manitoba and the CHTTC (Canadian Hydrokinetic Test Center). This was our first collaboration partner. It is our intention to continue to grow though collaboration.

In 2018 through we identified Smart-Hydro in Germany as a technology transfer partner for our program and signed a letter of intent in mid-2018 for a three year research and development collaboration.

In 2019 we were joined by NRCAN Canmet Energy in our program and they financed the acquisition of a prototype turbine for the team at Turtle Island Innovations and the CHTTC to work on.

In 2020 we have added a local partner in Nigeria. Environ-waste Nigeria Limited, led by its managing director, Casmir Ogueri, will provide a local team for our projects.
