Capro-X uses a natural fermentation process, which we call the WheyAway system. The WheyAway utilizes naturally-occurring, non-GMO microbes to upcycle lactose sugar contained in dairy waste streams on-site at processing plants. We plan to address the needs of increasingly larger customers each year to ultimately reach the scale of a large nationally-distributed brand by 2024.

In addition, Capro-X sees an immense opportunity to benefit the dairy industry by providing an alternate route for the permeate byproduct from milk and cheese whey processing, similarly upcycling permeate into green chemicals. Already, the company has performed in-house studies on the economics of permeate upcycling and we seek industry partners to support fermentation optimization and scale-up. For permeate-producing customers, we expect to transition to a biorefinery model where Capro-X will partner with the customer to share benefits of discounted permeate feedstock and chemicals sales.

The green chemicals produced by the WheyAway are natural and food grade fatty acids, and will be initially sold to the flavor and fragrance industry as sustainable alternatives to today’s current palm oil sources. Our chemicals are platform chemicals and can be converted into a variety of higher value products, such as medium chain triglycerides (MCT oil), which are used in human food products. Additionally, our chemicals have application as healthful feed additives, with demonstrated beneficial impacts for dairy cows; and can be converted into biofuels and bioplastics.
