The Indian government is actively pushing for full electrification with an aggressive target of full electrifiation by 2030. We feel that there has to be some intermediate solution which can serve both existing and new vehicles and ease the transition for various stakeholders into electric mobility. The aim of this kit is to convert an existing vehicle so that it can run either on pure electric mode or on the engine based on the operating conditions. It is a well known fact that engines are very inefficient at low speeds and stop and go traffic, where a lot of fuel is lost due to idling. At the same time, pure electric vehicles are still not being adopted widely because of lack of charging infrastructure on par with conventional fuel stations. The flexibility of retaining the conventional engine means that the driver can get potentially unlimited range from fuel when the battery runs out.
We have built a Proof of concept working prototype for conversion of an autorickshaw into a hybrid electric vehicle. We exhibited our working prototype at a national level Hackathon and were declared as one of the winners amongst a total of 30+ teams from across the country. We are a team of 4 mechanical engineers, with advanced degrees and exposure in the areas of - automobile engineering, business/finance, manufacturing technologies, electromechanical systems used in ev technology and finally embedded electronics and programming.
We chose the autorickshaw as the first vehicle to prove this concept because of the unique value proposition of this vehicle. This community mostly leads a hand to mouth existence as observed in research done by organizations such as WRI. Yet they often are seen as greedy and rude primarily due to the economics at play. If we can prove our concept with this community, for whom every rupee in terms of costs and earnings is very significant, we are sure that it can be easily scaled to any class of vehicles. Also, it solves the pressing need of emissions reduction in one of the most polluting class of vehicles plying on our roads.
