The multiplier effect and self sustaining program is designed to raise the economic power of the community of Zonkwa which situated in Zangon Kataf, Kaduna, Nigeria with and estimated population of 715,065 at a growth rate of 2.43 from the census of 2006. The major occupation of this community is farming with very rich arable farmlands and an average rainfall of 1096.6mm/yr. The mission of this program is to raise the economic standard of the community through the youth to the level to which they can provide for themselves basic needs of life: Food , Shelter and clothing for a period of 5 years (Phase 1). The strategy is to identify the total number of youths in all of the small clusters (Streets) and group them into 5. The target crop is ginger which is a cash crop with
Nigeria known to be the third largest producers after India and China and the bulk of this comes from this region where Zonkwa is situated. The first group receives the following in the first year as a soft loan during the raining season: 20 bags of ginger seedlings; 10 bags of organic fertilizer; Cash for Labor & transportation. It is estimated that every 20 bags of ginger will yield a minimum of 60 bags at harvest. At harvest time, the group returns back to the program half bags of ginger which is added to 15 bags to sponsor another youth in the next group in the following year. At this point, a youth who was given 20 bags of ginger and now has a harvest of 60, will have 20 bags reserved for next farming season, 5 bags returned to the program office and an excess of 35 bags to take to the market. At the beginning of the first year, 200 youths will receive 4000 bags of ginger seedlings and return 1000 bags at harvest time. 3000 bags is added to the 1000 returned in the first year and given to another 200 in the second year. At harvest in the second year, 2000 bags are returned. 3000 bags are returned third year. This cycle is repeated until the program becomes self sustaining. Other crops are also considered for this program. More details, criteria, tables, statistics can be provided at request
