Operation
• On entering, an audio announcement is triggered, and the unit advises that an audio description of the room is available. This greeting includes a reminder about handwashing.
• If the user would like the audio description, they are invited to wave their hand in front of the unit to activate the audio.
• The unit is fixed to one side of the door frame close to the door catch and after the initial announcement there are 4 pings to guide the user.
• Two sets of identical phrases then give a sequenced, pre-recorded description, so that the user can familiarise themselves with the layout. The recording is on average 3 minutes long.
• Fixtures and fittings are described if they are attached e.g. the toilet, hand basin, soap dispenser, hand drier etc. The description also includes how to use some of the fittings e.g. the toilet flush is a lever or press button. The description has been devised by a qualified mobility and orientation specialist with over 15 years’ experience in working with visually impaired people.
• The unit is delivered pre-programmed for each unique location ready for immediate installation.
• Audio quality is vital, and the unit uses a studio quality speaker to negate distortion at high volume levels.
• The unit is sealed and needs no additional on-site adjustments after the initial installation.
• The volume is adjustable to allow for varying environmental noise factors and can be adjusted during installation.
• If features within the facility are altered at any time in the future, change of fixtures etc, then new instructions can be provided by request
. • Roommate® is mains powered.
