ekolive s.r.o is a start-up / spin-off and IP owner of the EIT RawMaterials´ funded RIS project “BioLeach: Innovative Bio-treatment of RM” led by Technical University of Košice, focused on minerals refining by novel and innovative heterotrophic bioleaching.
From one perspective heterotrophic bioleaching is a new way of metals extraction in an economic and environmental way, never commercially used up to now, but developed by the ekolive team on industrial scale (150 and 300 tons of silica sand with glass manufacturer involvment) and verified on more than 50 primary and secondary raw materials.
From the other perspective heterotrophic biloleaching - a natural process of rock wheathering -, dissolving mineral and elements, generates hugh amounts of enriched nutrition solution, free of any hazardous containments, usable as precious liquid organic fertilizer.

The fertilizer use efficiency of agricultural crops is generally low, which results in poor crop yields and low economic benefits to farmers; however, impregnation of mineral fertilizers with bacteria is attracting significant attention.
Implementing such a safe and environmental friendly technology would be a viable solution for achieving sustainable restoration of degraded soils. Bacterial inocula have a potential to reinstate the fertility of degraded land through various processes. Bacteria increase the nutrient bioavailability through nitrogen fixation and mobilization of key nutrients (phosphorus, potassium and iron) to the crop plants while remediate soil structure by improving its aggregation and stability.

ekolive applied for the EIT Jumpstarter in 2018 as a very early idea holder and was selected by EIT RawMaterials due to the extremely unusual and innovative idea proposed and subsequently supported with booster funding and accelerator coaching.
The background to the support was the promissing contribution to the agenda of EIT RawMaterials and the impact that the idea of heterotrophic bioleaching of mineral raw materials could have for the entire industry - as well as the extremely engaged and committed team, which was particularly notable for the rapid adaptation of our training content - and thus, within a single year they pushed the basic idea up to TRL7.
In the course of ekolive´s further development, the comprehensive relevance of the developed "game-changing" technology for other core topics of the EIT and the EC (as part of the Green Deal) has emerged: environment, climate, sustainability, society and nutrition. I am convinced that ekolive will succeed.
