Let's consider you want to exchange 1M USD to EUR. If you do a direct exchange, the rate you get is pretty bad because you are forced to accept increasing price book orders from different people.
An existing solution is to split into smaller amounts and do multiple exchanges through multiple hops.
As an example you could exchange part of the sum through
USD -> GBP -> EUR
another through
USD -> JPY -> EUR
another through
USD -> CAD -> GBP -> EUR
and so on.

Existing solutions (e.g. Ripple, Stellar) consider the problem as exponential and intractable in real-time and use heuristics like limiting the number of paths and hops.
I designed an algorithm that finds the optimal paths in real-time.
