Over 65% of patients in orthopedic physical therapy rehab do not comply with their prescribed regimen. This is an enormous problem that physicians, physical therapists, insurance companies, and patients all want to fix. The reason that all of this is a problem is because the lack of patient compliance leads to longer recovery time, higher medical costs, and poorer outcomes. In fact, changing medical regulations are now penalizing hospitals for readmissions, and rating clinics based on patient outcomes.

That is why we founded ExoWear, to create a wearable device and mobile app to monitor patient’s physical therapy exercises at home. Our wearable confirms that patients have performed their exercises, animates patient movement in real time with feedback, and tracks the patient’s functional improvements.

The patient can attach up to three sensors (for now) on their limbs to track posture and joint rotation. Our mobile app makes it easy for physical therapists and physicians to assign patients’ their exercises, function goals, and activity restrictions. Physicians and physical therapists find themselves in weekly dispute between each other and with insurance companies over how much outpatient rehab the patient actually needs because currently there is no objective data readily available to healthcare providers that shows patient recovery rates with respect to patient compliance. In addition, hospital systems can use our device to cut down on utilization costs such as shifting patients away from skilled nursing facilities and into home health or outpatient PT.

Our minimum viable product is not just limited to orthopedic physical therapy. Workers’ compensation consultants are interested in using our technology to validate patient compliance and medical device manufacturers are interested in combining our product with other medical equipment. Eventually we hope to tailor our device to each specific market and run data analytics to determine cost (utilization) saving opportunities, to be able to identify patients at risk of readmission and “no show”, and to be able to determine workers’ compensation fraud.

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for ExoWear.

After receiving my PhD and my MBA (Booth), I joined Abbott Labs in 1988 and spent 17 years there. I also founded a company, Marathon Pharmaceuticals, so I have an idea of what it takes to build a successful startup.

I have personally met with Willian Cheng. I found him to be articulate, professional, resourceful, respectful and enthusiastic. It is this type of highly engaged entrepreneur that will give ExoWear the highest probability of success.

The team is well supported with mentors in the medical field. They are connected with doctors and physical therapists from a number of medical clinics like Carle Hospital, Partners Health Care, Hinsdale Orthopedics, and ATI Physical Therapy. Legally, ExoWear has also taken the right steps towards securing their IP.

I believe this team has a great idea that can become an important device in helping patients recover from an injury.
