Our Volume Reducing Bags (VRB) sanitation system is designed for immediate response in humanitarian emergencies, disaster preparedness and as an alternative to centralized sewage infrastructure.
It prevents and reduces disease outbreaks, especially in densely populated areas.
The VRB system is based on a two-stage treatment and filtering bags system, made with hydrophilic and hydrophobic COMPOSITE MEMBRANES, which reduces the volume of the waste by a FACTOR OF 10.
It is designed to be used in a SHARED / COMMUNAL latrine setup.
Our approach combines Urine Diverting Dry Toilet (UDDT), soak pit, and Container-Based Sanitation (CBS) strategies. The system is an above-ground, compact 0.7 x 1.1 x 0.8 meters unit that prevents any contact of contaminants with soil or groundwater. It attaches with a special “plug and play” sealing mechanism to a raised latrine superstructure, defined by UNHCR WASH manual and others. It can service 25 PEOPLE for up to 2 MONTHS.

The VRB innovative Mix Matrix membranes reduce the volume of waste by liquid separation, treatment, and filtration. The system contains: 1. fully sealed OUTER BAG with a filtering membrane and an outlet for SAFE greywater; 2. INNER BAG that attracts and releases liquids from solids. Based on existing research and successful experiments, we reached a PROOF of TECHNOLOGY for the significant reduction of liquids from solids. Simultaneously, we are conducting experiments for the treatment and filtration of the liquids. The two-volume reducing mechanisms are synchronized to filter and maintain the outflow of SAFE graywater.
The system is compact and light, easy to transport, and quick to install in any type of terrain while providing a significant usage time - crucial for rapid response to emergencies and populations in transit. Full inner bags can be easily detached and transferred to an off-site location for safe burial, or preferably as a WASTE to VALUE service, the content of the bag can be upcycled to generate energy or compost in a circular economy model. Which will reduce the cost for clients and end-users.
