Faxi: Enabling paid commuter carpooling, a global untapped business and environmental opportunity

Of the 15 million people that travel to work by car in the UK every day, 1.4 million are carpooling. In the United States carpooling is the second most popular method of commuting to work (11%-18% depending on state). Potentially £5 million a day could be passed from passengers to drivers as a contribution to costs for the estimated 28 million shared miles travelled.

Despite the size of the current market no smartphone technology exists to automatically calculate the shared journey cost and allow peer-to-peer payment. In fact none of the mobile technology synonymous with taxi ride sharing apps is available to the millions who engage in carpooling every day.

As part of a contract to provide Network Rail HQ a closed group carpooling platform, Faxi will launch the first ever smartphone application that provides an agreed cost per journey and one touch passenger to driver payment.

Faxi will generate £0.01 in commission for every paid shared mile. Those at NWR using the Faxi application to car share will also benefit from automated access to low-cost reserved parking saving a further £400 a year each (Patent applied for).

Large organisations with thousands of employees like Jaguar Land Rover, committed to making car sharing part of their transport infrastructure, achieve 30% of their workforce carpooling. Corporate travel surveys consistently show 25% to 70% of respondents willing to share their commute with a co-worker (compared with only 3% likely to share with a stranger).

AirBnB has revolutionised travel accommodation by directly connecting travellers to property owners. The world has woken up to the concept that the individual can generate revenue from their spare capacity. By providing smartphone technology to groups so that they can that easily identify car-poolers and painlessly share costs, Faxi can extend this revolution to the 76% of commuters that drive alone.

As climate change becomes an ever bigger political and corporate responsibility, governments and large organisations will come under increasing pressure to implement programs that have a proven environmental impact.

Faxi is one of those programs.
