Food and Water Research aims to focus the skills of the Directors into applied research to the water-energy-food nexus. Our research spans all facets of the environment and our principle expertise is in water management. From policy, through regulatory needs, design, construction and operation, we provide our services at each step of the process. Underpinning every research project we undertake is the sustainability of the solutions we provide. Water Use in Agri-Parks in South Africa: This research addresses the impact and management of South African Agri-parks on water quantity and quality. Agri-parks are Government initiatives that aims to uplift and empower previously disadvantaged individuals and revitalise agriculture. The main study area, Rooiwal Agri-park is next to a waste water treatment facility that is currently operating at 135% of its capacity. Sewage pollution severely impacts the Rooiwal farmers, and the team hopes to find further funding to help changing this problem into an opportunity: by irrigating their crops with sewage effluent, and discharging cleaner water.

Research into Aquaponics as a Rural Farming Option: This research is being carried out with the Agricultural Research Council to develop technology and systems to integrate aquaculture with hydroponics for rural farming.
We believe that our research is able to provide implementable solutions to assist rural and impoverished communities secure food production and a healthy living environment.
