We run a smartphone app and retail charity database that is designed to make it easy for the public to dispose of unwanted goods by finding local charities that will accept, and ideally collect, those goods. The App fulfils a similar "intermediary" role that Uber and Just Eat play in the Taxi and Takeaway markets, matching the public with local services. Gone for Good aims to increase levels of recycling / reuse of goods by society as well as substantially increasing the sums charities raise for good causes. We formally partner with retail charities who agree to participate in the scheme and will collect and accept different categories of goods. We then allow the public to submit details (photos, descriptions and cost price) of unwanted goods they want to dispose of and then, by comparing their postcode with those of the various charities' branches, find the most suitable charities to take their goods. The app then allows the donor to choose the charity he wants to donate to and specify whether he wants to add Gift Aid to his donation. We pass on brief details to the selected charity, for which we charge a small fee to the charity. The charity accepts the lead and then contacts the donor to arrange for delivery / collection. Once the goods are sold we liaise with the donor, via the app, to reconfirm the Gift Aid application to HMRC (based on the value the goods realise at sale) to maximise the monies the charities receive.
As well as raising overall donation levels to charities, the audit trail the app creates helps charities by minimising loss of goods by theft, it improves efficiency (by weeding out goods that are not suitable) as well as helping charities to know how best to price merchandise for resale (by collecting info on the original cost).
Additional functionality for the app is planned for later versions which would assist charities to more effectively plan routes for collections (through a co-operation agreement we are putting in place with Tom-Tom), possibly allow the public to book collection slots via the app as well as potentially providing training modules for charities retail volunteers. In short, the business sets out to increase levels of recycling, provide a solution for disposing of the public's unwanted goods as well as more generally aiming to boost the effectiveness of retail charities.
