Agricultural soils are today in a critical state (chemical pollution, depleted biodiversity, carbon levels, etc.) and solutions are urgently needed to preserve this essential resource. Greenback, the world's first agricultural soil health rating agency, is specifically tackling this major issue. After 18 months of R&D followed by the conduct of a first demonstrator study in France and Spain (pre-creation of the company), we have developed a unique methodology to standardly rate, based on biodiversity, carbon and pollution determinants, the health of agricultural lands.

We aim at providing, as an independent trusted third party, all stakeholders in the value chain of bio-based industries with a tool to precisely measure the impact of their activities on the health of their dedicated cultivated plots for them to preserve these resources better.

Greenback, created in Dec. 2019 by highly experienced and successful entrepreneurs, has designed its technology and partnerships to be deployable on five continents as early as 2021. Our business model relies on a “Software as a Service mode” with a rating price as low as €1 per ha/year.

Greenback’s Rating provides a fact-based and opposable triple indexes model (biodiversity, carbon and pollution) of soil health and trend from a stakeholder perspective. This pioneer rating consists of a score to rank the health of the soil according to (i) its natural fertility (ability to produce without inputs); (ii) its resilience to external stresses (farming practices, climate change, erosion); and (iii) its ability to produce healthy food. This significant innovative rating is generated using our proprietary and first of a kind Hybrid Method Combining In Situ Measurements (Biological, chemical, etc.), Big Data (satellite imagery in particular) and Machine Learning. The rating is positioned as a common language for all stakeholders to measure the effectiveness of the agroecological transition. It is based on Reference Value specific to each type of soil. It thus offers added value in several areas, including (i) Allowing agro-industry to report its impact on soils to consumers and better manage its supply policies, (ii) Certifying the natural soil fertility in land transactions for landowners, banks, insurance companies, and investment funds and (iii) Guiding the decision-making process in the allocation of public financial assistance to farmers (grants, subsidized loans, insurance, inter alia).

During my career as a food & agriculture policy advisor, a constant preoccupation was how to accelerate a sustainable & just transition, in order to be able to face the multiple and interconnected challenges linked to food systems. The answer crucially implies the involvement of the private sector in this transition. How can we design tools that can make this transition an opportunity - and not a constraint - for companies? Greenback provides a crucial answer to this question, focusing on the key strategic resource of food systems: soil. The Greenback innovation provides a reliable and measurable tool to assess the impact of agricultural practices on soil, and thus a proxy for overall sustainability. The tool has been designed on the specific needs of key actors of the food chain, filling a crucial gap between science and the market. I would, therefore, recommend Greenback as a promising solution to transition towards soils 3.0 and to spark a transition across global food systems.
