ClassAlexa is a voice assistant platform for the classroom. Schools, like homes, are adopting smart speakers fast. Yet teachers only get access to basic functions, like timers or music. So we made the Alexa device more education-friendly. We created a software platform, giving busy teachers an extra “pair of hands” to automate daily tasks, improve from peers, and engage students with a powerful resource.

By saying a few words, ClassAlexa gives teachers access to 1- to 5-minute activities, helping students refocus after lunch, warm up with a word problem, or become more mindful. In the time it takes to compose a Tweet, teachers can create a custom activity, from a vocabulary review, to additional questions for a student needing practice. From anywhere in the room teachers can add a voice note to review later or share to home.

Next, we’re building for students, to become active learners, by creating voice experiences to solve real world challenges. We’re building for the 5000 education technology products funded in the last 5 years, to complement their screen-only apps with short, compelling, voice-based experiences. With our first partner, TeachingBooks, students can listen to audio from amazing authors via their API. Like the podcast trend, seeing isn't always needed. And we’re building for parents, to stay involved through their home smart speaker, with tidbits of the day to discuss over dinner.

The ClassAlexa platform, consists of 3 voice skills, one for activities, one for random lists, and one for note taking. A web app ties these together, where teachers discover and customize activities, plus manage voice notes. While we started on Alexa, we've already ported 50% of our code to Google Home.

Here’s what we’ve heard from teachers about ClassAlexa:
(1) Less digging, more discussing “Students got a question I thought was too difficult... incredibly it prompted a rich conversation.” and “I love that I don’t have to look for a morning greeting.”
(2) Improved classroom management, “With ClassAlexa running the dismissal routine, it’s gone better than it’s ever gone before.” and “It’s like having another adult in the room.”
(3) Social-emotional support for all learners “a different voice encouraging them to calm rather than our repeated requests.” And, “our autistic students respond better to the Alexa’s neutral voice.”
(4) Individualized learning, “early finishers loved the custom quiz...now I’m in two places at once.”
