This is the rationale behind we develop this project – BLACK motor.

HVAC (heat, ventilation & air-conditioning) like rangehood, bathroom fan, and exhaust fan will be our first target market because usually involved continuous running and long usage time. Savings in energy and money will be much more obvious while compare to kitchen appliances like blender which usually just operate for less than a minute.

In our first prototype, a normal AC motor use 60W power to drive a rangehood blower, our Hybrid BLACK just consumes 19W to provide same performance, just one third of the energy consumed. If we put back these figures into the energy label regulation calculations, the rangehood can be upgraded from class D to class B. Sure, BLDC is capable of bring the unit to even class A, but the most important point is, the cost of our controller is just around 10-20% of the BLDC one. This encouraging result proved our concept is workable and feasible.

Our next step will be focused on 2 directions: 1) higher power applications (e.g. air conditioner and refrigerator) and 2) higher speed applications (e.g. vacuum cleaner and power tools). The higher the power, the higher the percentage the energy actually saved
