IDEA NYC is a company using blockchain technology to create apps dedicated to Innovating, Democratizing, Educating, and Accelerating community activity. We can change the lives of millions of New Yorkers who currently access, or are in need of government and community based resources. As it stands, the largest barriers to accessing vital resources includes providing proof of ID in person, filling out lengthy applications, and the information gap on what opportunities exist. These barriers take time and energy that the most marginalized New Yorkers don’t always have. That’s why we at IDEA NY created NY Common (New York Communities Online), our first web-first mobile application that centralizes thousands of resources, identifies relevant programs for each user, and leverages a digital identity wallet that can allow them to provide proof of ID to apply in minutes. We use a blockchain based wallet because we know how important it is to ensure security and privacy for our users, while creating an environment that puts them in the driver’s seat, allowing them to dictate when and where their information is shared. By putting users on a map, we can create a centralized view of the support that exists, closing the information gap.So far, we’ve been able to prototype and demo our product, but this funding would be essential to scaling our product to serve NYC.
Secondly, as we are a team led by born and raised New Yorkers from low-income first-generation backgrounds, we are committed to re-investing in our community, and are in the process of launching our program that teaches students in the five boroughs about emerging technologies, promoting a STEAM education. We have secured partnerships with high schools in Queens which currently have NO extracurricular activities revolving around STEAM for their students, in addition we have a list of organizations we’ve spoken to who would be interested in partnering to promote access to the tech industry for underserved communities. Our program would serve to educate students while developing marketable skills such as coding, design, and product management to give them a competitive advantage both for college and the job market. We at IDEA NY believe it’s not enough to innovate around social impact tech to serve communities, we must educate those very communities in the process to accelerate their growth.
