As an environmental engineering company, we often work with companies in the agricultural sector. All of them share the same problem: they spend a lot of time and money to dispose of their bio-based residues and wastes. According to Eurostat, in fact, the NACE_R2 Sector (Agriculture, forestry and fishing) produces an average of 33 Millions of Tons/year of animal and vegetal wastes, spending billions of € for their disposal. At the same time, these cheap bio-based raw materials could instead be used as feedstocks by all the companies in the nascent sector of the Bio-Economy to produce fuels, fibres, food, feed and chemicals, replacing their fossil fuel equivalents.
However, due to the lack of valid sales channels, aggregated data and awareness, these companies are missing all those opportunities: in most cases they do not know how their residues may be useful and to whom and how they could be sold. We want to solve these problems with InSymbio, the first single digital European B2B Marketplace for bio-based residues and by-products with bidding processes and analytics.
Our main objective is to bring together businesses in the Agriculture and Forestry Sectors with businesses in the BioEconomy Sector (bio-based products and chemicals, bioenergy, biofuels, etc.), in order to create closed-loop systems in which one company’s wastes or residues are another company’s raw material and exploit the potential of the Circular Economy applied to the BioEconomy sector.
According to EuropaBio, today the business opportunity related to the European Bioeconomy is already worth more than €2 trillion annually and employs over 22 million people, often in rural or coastal areas and in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Just in the EU, €3.7 billion investments are expected in bio-based innovation from 2014-2020 (Horizon 2020).
