The core product of Jereed is furniture produced from the date palm leaf midrib mats “DPLM”. It is our intention to target selected export markets for these products, where consumer appreciation for the concept of “green furniture” would be appreciated. Therefore, the market analysis is based on the export furniture markets with highlights of Egypt’s perceived position as well.

The proposed project for this business plan aims to capitalize on the success of a pilot phase that took place in one of the poorest villages of the Minya Governorate, Al Qayat, from August 2010 to September 2012. It trained and employed 9 workers and succeeded in manufacturing high quality products made from palm midribs.

The pilot phase provided a model of small enterprises that are based on manufacturing secondary products of 42,000 palm trees which are readily available in Al Qayat and the near-by villages. It helped create a vision of how to replicate the model in the same village or in other villages by showcasing a successful home-grown development model. Success of such a model goes beyond financial returns to include societal and cultural returns that are manifest in empowerment of local communities and giving local inhabitants the lead in developing their own communities.

The MENA region is well known for its dates, a distinct fruit that is grown on date palm trees. Egypt stands out within the region as a key cultivator of palm trees, and an estimated 12 million female productive palms are found in Egypt, and distributed across the country
JEREED is aiming to create the first labor intensive ecofriendly sustainably sourced palm-tree wood products and furniture.
Our pilot phase is conducted in one of the poorest villages in Egypt. Based on the UN Human Development report for Egypt, we found that 762 of the poorest villages are in the governorates of Assuit, Sohag and Menya in Upper Egypt. Of those 44% are in Menya alone. Given that Menya was the closest to Cairo, which reduced commuting time, we conducted further research on the poorest villages in Menya governorate.
