TCommonLit is a nonprofit edtech organization dedicated to ensuring that all students graduate high school with the reading and writing skills necessary to succeed in college and career.
The systemic problem CommonLit addresses is that 62% of high school students graduate unable to read proficiently. Adults who can’t read and write well are much less likely to earn bachelor’s degrees and far more likely to end up incarcerated, dependent on the social safety net, and caught in the cycle of poverty. This persistent problem disproportionately affects students from low-income communities, black and Latino students, and English Language Learners. This problem reflects poorly on our education system, which is failing to adequately prepare students with the reading and writing skills they need to be successful. In large part, these outcomes result from a vicious cycle of poor teaching practice in middle and high school caused by inadequate access to quality secondary English resources. CommonLit is a scalable, tested digital reading intervention that disrupts this cycle by making the highest-quality instructional materials available to all teachers and students for free.
We remedy a market failure. The students who most need high-quality materials and cutting edge technology disproportionately attend under-resourced schools, which either cannot afford high-quality products, or must cut needed funding from other areas (like arts and extracurriculars) to pay for expensive resources. CommonLit leapfrogs the traditional district acquisition process by making excellent content and technology available for free to any teacher with an internet connection.
