Around 300,000 UK women experience their first hot flush every year. This debilitating symptom of menopause affects women for an average of 4 years but has been known to last as long as 25 years, striking as often as every 20 minutes. Of course, this is not just a UK issue - in the US for example, an estimated 6,000 women enter menopause every day of which around 75% will experience flushes. Any of these women will tell you just how uncomfortable they are, feeling an intense heat rising through your body, leaving you short of breath and drenched in sweat day and night. From extensive user research it is these night sweats that are particularly problematic, interrupting a woman’s sleep up to 20 times every night. This has severe knock-on effects the following day such as lack of concentration and mood swings.
One of the ways Grace solves this:
By detecting flushes early, Grace becomes the world’s first physical product to automate the cooling process. This is vital if women are to relieve their night sweats as well as hot flushes. Currently, when using a manual device, women still wake up, short of breath drenched in sweat. By this point, applying cooling can only provide some degree of relief. Grace's goal is to allow women to continue sleeping throughout the night, unaware and unaffected by their flushes.
