ComfortBreak
Unleashing positive change through innovation in women's health
ComfortBreak is a physical product based social enterprise.
ComfortBreak is aiming to help girls such as the 1 million teenage brides in Malawi who are undergoing multiple forced pregnancies and as a result have developed incontinence. The severe lack of healthcare infrastructure in the wake of decades of civil war have forced these girls to deal with the wetness of incontinence during pregnancy, and menstruation in between pregnancies, by using leaves and rags. This leads to daily shame, discomfort and infection risk - burdening the already overwhelmed healthcare resources. Notably, gender violence is rampant in such struggling economies and women are considered second class citizens.
ComfortBreak is developing a frugally innovative reusable sanitary pad that we can teach the girls to build and sell themselves. This will help them to earn an income, become more independent, and lift themselves out of the human rights violations they are facing. Our product is 4 times more affordable, so will simultaneously reduce the healthcare burden while reviving the local economy through female entrepreneurship.
