The Venezuelan crisis is expected to reach 7.5M people by 2023, of which 6M will be residing in Latin America, and over 2.5M in Colombia. Today, Colombia holds the second largest IDP population in the world after Syria, combining Venezuelan refugees and Colombian IDP´s from its decades long armed conflict. This situation has deepened with the COVID-19 pandemic, and we believe that the private sector plays a critical role in creating market-driven solutions.
DignifAI is applying to the WFP Innovation Fund to grow our Impact Sourcing operation in the Colombian-Venezuelan border city of Cucuta. DignifAI offers data-annotation services for companies and organizations that require supervised training of their Artificial Intelligence (AI) models. To execute this workflow, DignifAI recruits and trains Venezuelan migrant and Colombian IDP’s to execute the data-labelling under our supervision and with our technological tools. Our Impact Hypothesis is that by sourcing AI micro-work and managing the project management, DignifAI can operate as a Springboard for employment inclusion by developing their basic workplace and computer skills in an organized BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) setting.
Our model is an innovative hybrid that combines training and employment development. Through their experience in data-labelling work, they develop specific techniques including image and data collection, annotation and segmentation, text analysis, and database cleaning. It is this combination of digital microwork and training that is the foundation of the economic inclusion ladder; helping beneficiaries develop the baseline digital tools needed before taking the additional steps of formal employment or entrepreneurship. We are also giving them support in developing the soft skills needed in any work environment such as communication, punctuality, teamwork, and working on deadlines – to introduce them to this ecosystem of productivity and improve their statistical probability of integrating into the labor market and breaking their poverty cycle.
Finally, during their time with us our annotator-beneficiaries are paid while they receive these training and upskilling courses. The payment is structured as a temporary-freelance employment opportunity and is calculated as a fixed and variable stack, with the floor being the legal minimum wage in Colombia with the opportunity to earn more based on performance incentives. more
