Today’s recruitment industry does not serve its customers well.

If you’re an employee, it’s hard to find a job that fits the criteria that are important to you. According to the Office for National Statistics, feelings of happiness, life satisfaction and the sense that one's activities are worthwhile all decrease with every successive minute of travel to work.

If you’re an employee, it’s hard to find a job that fits the criteria that are important to you. According to the Office for National Statistics, feelings of happiness, life satisfaction and the sense that one's activities are worthwhile all decrease with every successive minute of travel to work.

Most people want a job that fits their lifestyle and yet it’s not possible to structure a job search by location or commute requirements. There is poor search functionality for other environmental criteria too. Time is wasted on job adverts that don’t meet someone’s basic requirements. It’s not possible to make quick and informed decisions on job suitability because information on the basics like commute time and expense isn’t available.

If you’re an employer, recruitment is expensive and time-consuming. Time is wasted on candidates who will not accept a role because it doesn’t meet their basic needs. Today’s candidates will apply directly to an employer if it’s made easy for them, saving costly recruiter fees.

Job spot is a web platform that aims to solve these problems for employees and employers alike.

Freely available map data, including commute time, type and cost, is used to drive a search structured around locations that are important to the employee (e.g. home, schools, other activities). With live job listings organized around location, it enables employees to review real options that meet their needs. Employees also have the option to save their search, set alerts and apply directly when the right role comes up in their search or appears in their inbox.

In phase II, we plan to collect and surface environmental information that gives employees even better information on a potential role, such as cycle parking or showers in the office.

The preferred revenue model is listing fees: the platform is free to employees but employers pay to list: either a one-off fee to list a role or a subscription that gives bulk discounts for multiple listings.

The recruitment market is big, in year-on-year growth and is dominated by big, slow, change-resistant organisations that are not customer-focused. There’s an opportunity for a customer-oriented player to disrupt the space, particularly if it’s first to market.
