Statistics show that one in five children in the U.S. has a diagnosable mental health condition and 80% are not receiving the treatment they need. The statistics have only gotten worse. For example, in October 2019, the CDC reported that the suicide rate among children aged 10 through 14 has nearly tripled from 2007 to 2017, while the suicide rate among older teenagers has increased by 76% during that same time, leaving it the second leading cause of death among children ages 10-19.
Untreated or minimally treated youth grow into “unwell” adults, straining life potentials and burdening our economic infrastructure. As such,...futuresTHRIVE is using the power of artificial intelligence in combination with human wisdom and heart to mainstream pediatric mental health screenings for children ages 4-21. Today we are in the development of the first step, a first to market universal validated screener for pediatricians to track, manage and treat youth mental health early and often. Implemented during the well-child visit in conjunction with the vision and hearing screener, the data gathered would provide baseline information for doctors and families, similar to the physical baseline of a height and weight chart.
Decades of health research show that early intervention is by far the most effective means of preventative care. But stigma and misunderstanding are still extreme barriers to help seeking practices. The ...futuresTHRIVE AI allows pediatric offices to flag and address concerns early and in turn educate and help families without stigma or judgment. In the ...futuresTHRIVE model, the trusted pediatrician and an in-office mental health practitioner will provide a true continuum of care for families in need, educating and supporting a new belief system surrounding mental health. Mental health will no longer be something considered separate and distinct from physical health: it will become what it is—an integral part of an individual’s overall well being.
