Did you know that only 60% of medication is taken as prescribed by a healthcare professional? And that the costs of this amount to billions of euros a year, even in such a small country as the Netherlands? And those are only the costs for our society. Personal costs for the user are even worse: a largen burden of disease and longer time needed to recover. Pit Janssen, pharmacist by profession, recognized this huge problem of therapy adherence early in his career. He also noticed the lack of engagement between users and healthcare professionals. Janssen therefore contacted Edwin Hermkens, computer scientist and longtime friend. Together they founded MedApp, an application that supports users with their use of medication. MedApp is based on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology In only two years MedApp has grown from an application to a platform with more than one hundred thousand users. MedApp is growing rapidly because it succeeds where other medication platforms fail: user engagement. The platform connects an active group of users to a variety of health channels. This multi-faceted marketplace strategy offers an exceptional opportunity to reach a large number of individuals who are active on the platform. Given the engagement with multiple health channels, there is a broad range of transactions, including medication delivery and data distribution, that can be facilitated via the platform. The app also successfully tackles the three underlying factors of therapy nonadherence: unintended behavior, a lack of education about the treatment or condition and bad organizational skills. The comprehensive functionalities of MedApp ensure that users can’t forget their medication because of (smart) medication alarms (behavior), have access to prescription leaflets (education) and won’t run out of medication (organization). MedApp attaches great importance to facilitating every aspect of medication. Users should be able to enjoy life to the fullest and not having to worry about their health. MedApp therefore aims to unburden the user as much as possible, starting with their use of medication: the common thread in their treatment and recovery. MedApp believes in prevention over healing and therefore offers users the possibility to monitor their own health. The user is in charge, with MedApp giving them the right information at the right time.
