The Emma cloud platform is patient centered, meaning that patients connect their care givers, including doctors, hospital systems and family to their personal community. The patient is in charge and decides with whom to share his data. The company earlier received a grant from de Dutch Ministry (Health~Holland) to complete a pilot. A 500 person rct is now being prepared to validate medication adherence improvements in other patient groups, including kidney transplant, asthma, diabetes-1 an cystic fibrosis.
The Emma platform helps COPD patients in the region West Brabant to stay out of hospital by giving them clear instructions when they experience exacerbation symptoms. Patients feel less anxiety and become more active using individualized goal setting algorithms, overseen by their physiotherapist. The Hospital’s lung physicians monitor the patient remotely using validated questionnaires and rules that warn them actively when a strong deviation is noted. Weight is monitored for BMI, hypertension and lung edema by the GP’s nurse practitioner and dietitian. The Leiden University Medical Center recently started a validation trial amongst 40 COPD patients to confirm the sometimes spectacular results in the first test group.
Recently, a large blood pressure monitor manufacturer approached Medicine Men to connect their home bp monitors to GP offices. Together with the UMC Utrecht, we developed a branded application on top of the Emma platform that will be available for free to all Dutch GP’s from this summer. The platform is CE medical device certified and provides validated blood pressure measurement that can be used for clinical decisions by doctors. The system is expected to be available in other European countries before the end of this year.
