1 in 4 inner-city youth witnesses a murder by 17. 1 in 3 suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Yet with one counselor to every 500+ students in the average urban school district, most youth are not getting the support they need.

We are a tech nonprofit with the mission of empowering youth of color to heal from trauma from systemic oppression. We provide personalized mental health coaching to youth over text message. Unlike a crisis text line, we reach out to youth proactively, reaching them on both good days and bad days. Our trained coaches check in with youth daily and guide them in building evidence-based positive coping skills for overcoming the impacts of trauma.

We're meeting youth where they are, creating a safe, easy space for them to take the critical first steps in their healing journey. One of our users said: "Everyone goes through stuff, and some people shut down like I would have. [MindRight] helps me get back up again." Through our data reporting and triage ...

MindRight is finding innovative ways to serve a young population with tools that work for them, in the context of their daily lives, and they’re seeing results. Co-founders Ashley Edwards and Alina Liao are ambitious in their goals AND have the ability to execute. They’ve proven their model in early pilots and have a pipeline of more schools and students to serve. They’ve studied the problem of youth facing trauma relentlessly, and have been extremely focused from the start. Finally, they are a stellar duo who work well with one another and complement one another perfectly. I highly recommend the two of them. They are shining examples of the innovative and compassionate entrepreneurs our world needs.

I am happy to support Ashley Edwards and Alina Liao’s application for the Future Cities Accelerator. As a clinical psychologist in Stanford’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, I have advised Ashley and Alina as they developed their product, MindRight. This text messaging service assists school personnel in identifying and supporting students experiencing distress related to trauma exposure. MindRight is a much-needed tool in the fields of education and mental health as it addresses the devastating impact of child traumatic stress by helping to connect students to supports in systems that are typically under-resourced. MindRight provides education and coaching to raise awareness about the impact of trauma, normalize student reactions to traumatic stress, and promote development of skills to help students cope with trauma. Ashley and Alina have done an outstanding job of developing their product, engaging stakeholders, and promoting social justice in their efforts.
