Mocean Energy is developing Seabase, an offshore renewable energy (ORE) station that produces energy from ocean waves and solar panels and stores it in batteries. The energy is used to 1) power ocean sensors and communications equipment, and 2) recharge ocean drones, including those that operate on the sea surface, underwater, and in the air. In fact, we propose to investigate two versions of Seabase: 1) Seabase-0, a moored version, and 2) Seabase-V, an unmoored version, which uses wave hydrofoils and controls for propulsion and station-keeping.
Seabase builds upon our existing IP of hinged-raft wave energy converter (WEC) with a novel geometry that increases wave forces and motions so that it absorbs 3 times more power than the traditional hinged raft. In addition to the geometry, our strength is in the WEC design process, which includes: optimisation with in-house software tools, rapid validation in wave tanks, and strong understanding of engineering requirements.

Mocean has been awarded over £1M of funding from Wave Energy Scotland (WES) to develop its WEC and are on a track to receive another £3.3M to build a sea-going prototype. However, Seabase is a variation on our existing concept and so requires a redesign, which will be carried out with funding from a Scottish Enterprise SMART Feasibility study and a small round of investment.
The market for Seabase is ocean robotics within the broader ocean observation market. Increasingly, remote, unmanned, robotic systems are used to secure national coastlines, collect scientific data, survey the sea floor, inspect floating and sub-sea infrastructure, track marine wildlife and monitor the environment. The industries engaged in these activities include: defence, offshore O&G, science, fisheries, aquaculture, ports, shipping, and subsea mining. We estimate the total ocean observation market at £9.5B; the market for autonomous vehicles is £290M+, and the market for Seabase is £50M.
