We have developed small scale shrouded horizontal-axis wind turbine to offer sustainable energy resources for off-grid base stations as an alternative to diesel-generators.
Small scale wind turbine with shrouded geometry that augments the flow in throat section. Hence, power production increases by 3 times than conventional wind turbines. Additionally, shrouded geometry improves starting characteristic of the turbine that will increase overall sustainability of energy production. Rotor geometry is optimized especially for extremely low wind speeds. Ensuring turbine generator matching in this product, direct-drive technology is used without gearbox which eliminates energy loses due to friction. Furthermore, noise level is reduced by using shroud that diminishes tip vortices which is the main source of the noise and direct-drive technology. It is a maintenance free product and has 20+ year of design life cycle.
Our beachhead market is the off-grid base stations of mobile operators. There are 15 thousands off-grid base stations in Turkey and 1 million off-grid base stations in the world. There are 100 thousands base stations in Turkey, and 6 million base stations in the world in total both off-grid and on-grid ones. Off-grid base stations corresponds to 210M dollars in Turkey and 14B dollars in the world, respectively.
Mobile operators are currently using diesel-generators on their off-grid base stations, which is an inefficient, unsustainable way due to high operation and maintenance cost of generators. Inbound logistics of the fuel is also costly. And, it’s really difficult to keep the signal service uninterrupted due to high operational costs.
We are in contact with Turk Telekom willing to be our pilot customer and buy between 100-600 after pilot, Turkcell and BTC from Bahamas operating across 18 countries. EnerjiSA is also asking for pilot application. They want to use our product at EV’s charging stations of e-şarj. And, OSTIM is willing to buy first prototype to install on their green-building.
We have two working prototypes. The first one, smaller scale, is designed for testing in the laboratory of METU Center for Wind Energy. The second one is designed as a product in 1/1 scale to install to the field. The 1/1 scale prototype will be installed to the METU Campus nowadays.

Momentum is also a spin-off company of METU Center for Wind Energy, i.e, the team and the product is supported by a strong academic staff of the METU Center for Wind Energy.
