At MOTI, we help people be their better selves - one habit at a time. Our first product, the MOTI Nudge, is a personable IOT device based on insights from behavioral science, social robotics, and human-centered design.

The MOTI Nudge works by first placing him in the location best suited for your habit (a bedside table, kitchen counter, office desk etc.). As a physical object and social robot, MOTI not only becomes a visual cue for your commitment to a particular habit - he becomes your friend. Every time you complete your habit, you let MOTI know though a satisfying push of his faceplate, and MOTI celebrates your small win with lights, sounds, and haptics. It’s this immediate gratification your brain craves for habit formation. However, slack on your habit and MOTI might get sad, angry, or stay purely encouraging.

Despite MOTI’s deceptively simple outside, his insides are filled with wifi-enabled machine learning smarts. MOTI gets to know you and the better you get at your habit...

It’s this immediate gratification your brain craves for habit formation. However, slack on your habit and MOTI might get sad, angry, or stay purely encouraging.

Despite MOTI’s deceptively simple outside, his insides are filled with wifi-enabled machine learning smarts. MOTI gets to know you and the better you get at your habit, the more his celebrations evolve. MOTI’s reminders are driven by our real-time categorization of each user into “motivational buckets” with the current ones being fear, guilt, or hope. This categorization also transcends how information is displayed in MOTI’s dashboards and digests. As users progress, MOTI auto-detects who is falling of their habit and why. This entire back-end system is our “special sauce” - targeted and customized experiences per individual and per habit, specifically for behavior change.

MOTI also has a companion app, where users can select specific habit modules, compete with friends and family, download custom personality packs for their MOTI, and integrate with other smart devices. These features offer revenue streams beyond hardware sales.

The MOTI Nudge is built off over a decade of research in academia, translated into the consumer world. Our own beta testing yielded promising results - 85% of users surveyed saying MOTI was essential to their habit progress. The reason being that MOTI provides a simpler and more meaningful experience than the competition. As one user put it - “it’s like you’re impressing someone, even though it’s not actually a someone.” Plus, MOTI doesn’t require you to track through an app or remember to charge and put it on.

Future MOTI products will expand to new markets, explore portability and modularity and integrate with new habit-forming solutions - whether through hardware or software.

I believe that MOTI is a very exciting product -- it is based on a simple yet powerful idea that simple cues can change important habits and improve your life. I don't believe there is any other product that can match this -- it will not just have "users" but "fans" who engage with MOTI very actively. I am looking forward to seeing all the wonderful things this product can do and where the company can go.

Vivian Rosenthal Co-Founder at Snaps

My name is Vivian Rosenthal, and I am the founder-in-residence at Google's 30 Weeks, a new entrepreneurship program for designers to build startups. Over the past five months, I have been thoroughly impressed by MOTI's founder, Kayla Matheus. She has gone from early problem definition, creating the first MVPs, and now rallying a substantial team with speed and determination. Kayla has a sharp mind, passionate work ethic, and high emotional intelligence. With her background in both design and engineering, she has the creativity and technical smarts to lead a diverse team and create a product that rises above the noise. In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend the MOTI team for acceptance. The Qualcomm Robotics Accelerator has the chance to work with an impressive group of individuals, an exciting product that can impact many lives, and female founders who are furthering the role of women in technology.
