Our solution involves putting up a Greenhouse Fish Farm, (construction currently ongoing).
On its completion, we are to rear African Tilapia type of fish because of its popularity in the area. We chose on putting the fish in a Greenhouse because our site location is in a cold area and Tilapia do best in warmer climates.
The design on our pond is quite unique as compared to the few we have visited in the area. Most ponds in the area are either dug on the ground or a flat structure built to hold the water the fish thrive in, thus water is stagnant.
Mtaani Fish Farm is a raised-slanted pond that allows for water circulation which increases oxygen content and improves the quality of fish.
Being a startup and with limited resources, we have opted to narrow our solutions to addressing the problems affecting our immediate area of operation.

The immediate problems the farmers face are as listed;
1. Diversification of farming activities to reduce crop failure
2. Education on benefits of fish farming
3. Proper fish management skills
4. Creation of awareness of modern technology available for aiding farming

To address the above problems, we are to set up a make-shift learning center at the site once we are in operation. We will educate the farmers on the benefits of fish rearing which is all season as compared to crop farming which depends on the seasonal changes. This will be effective since at the site, the farmers will practically relate by seeing how we operate our farm. They will also find it worth doing since they can combine fish farming with their normal farming activities as the pond can be built on a small portion of the farm.
We have already formed networks with Egerton University Agri-Business Department and Open Arms Children’s Home who would act as a guide to our training on pond management. We will avail the information on pond management we learn from our networks to the farmers in a way they can understand and implement. We will also connect them with the more networks we make as we conduct our business.
My partner and I having skills in Computer Science and Telecommunication, Mtaani Fish Farm is to be automated, i.e. remotely checking temperature changes in the greenhouse, controlling feeding times, monitoring ammonia, oxygen, and nitrogen concentrations through computerizing the pond to relay these information via mobile phones.
Our long-term goal is to assist the farmers start their own ponds, creating a common fish market.
