Existing electric propulsion systems are only designed for power levels of 5kW. As the space market continues to grow and expand, new mission scenarios will require larger spacecraft with heavier payloads. Chemical propulsion systems are highly inefficient, thus electric propulsion systems that can operate at higher powers are needed.

Current technologies such as hall effect thrusters are limited by their scalability. As the power increases, the associated mass and volume penalties are signficiant. MPD technology, on the other hand, simple, robust, inherently suitable for high powers, has excellent scalability and can operate with alternative propellants.

Our product is inherently scalable and suitable for high power spacecraft missions. The incorporation of high-temperature superconductors leads to a product which is lightweight, compact and efficient. Other electric propulsion technologies suffer severe mass and volume penalties when scaling to higher powers, and operate using expensive propellants such as Xenon. Our technology can operate with a wide range of alternative propellants at high efficiencies, with an overall lighter and more compact system. This translates to millions of Euros in savings due to reduced propellant and launch costs.
