We use a text message interface—a phone number, which they add to their contacts as “n gram”—to engage the extended family, sending texts that prompt them to share information about their loved one with Alzheimer’s (e.g alma mater, hobbies, favorite songs, photographs, anecdotes).

We will also text family tips on reminiscence therapy, one of the few proven therapies for dementia patients, which involves prompting people to remember old memories. They don’t have to download an app or go to a website, they just have to send a few texts. Furthermore, it opens new avenues for conversation and connection during visits with the patient.

The information shared by the family will ultimately serve as the basis for interactive and customized virtual reality experiences. For example, if a grandfather went to Columbia University and loved the Beach Boys, his granddaughter could take him back to his college glory days (using Google’s street view and other publicly available data) with a soundtrack of his favorite songs playing.

We will gather data on how the family interacts with the texts, and the virtual reality experiences provide an opportunity to greatly enhance the value of our data asset. How patients interact with these environments (e.g. gaze, hand movements) can be paired with biofeedback (e.g. pulse, sleep) through simple wearables to gain an understanding of changes in cognition that will allow us to optimize and improve the treatments over time.

Moreover, this data asset could provide value to and potential partnerships with insurers, providers, and life sciences companies.

Our long-term goal is to be able to predict declines in cognition and to engage in preventative strengthening exercises to help people expand their healthy lifespans, and to improve the aging process for the whole family.
