An aging population and a ever more demanding industrial environment require innovative exoskelletal solutions. Millions of people suffer from lack of strength or pain in the hand. The global population aged 60 years or over numbered 962 million in 2017 worldwide, more than twice as large as in 1980. There are also 15 million new cases of stroke per year worldwide and 50 million people in the USA suffering from arthritis. Adding to this, repetitive-stress job injuries account for around 30% of doctor diagnosed MSDs. NUADA is bringing to the market an innovative hand function support system which uses thin, breathable, flexible and smart textiles to provide a light, non-intrusive, safe and small glove, to be used on an everyday basis. With Nuada, a user can hold up to 40 kg’s with the hand completely relaxed. Our goal is to make the experience so seamless, that users forget they’re wearing it. Although the main focus of Nuada is the development of a new kind of exoskeleton technology, human interaction is limited by sensors that are inadequate for soft wearables. We are looking to develop a new generation of sensors arrays for wearables. With the integration of these systems, the user will be able to move the hand naturally and the system will be able to adapt to every minute user movement, instead of actuating predetermined movements or interact with the user by directly responding to simple signals such as pressure. Nuada can be used both as an injury prevention equipment as well as functional support system and even on rehabilitation treatments.
