The Holy Grail of robotics development is a robot with general purpose capabilities and intelligence. We can achieve this based upon our radical understanding of the nature of behaviour within living systems, and its application to robotics. Our vision is to develop robotics systems that, at last, replicate the adaptive and purposeful nature of living systems in stark contrast to the rigid, inflexibility of current systems.

The current paradigm across psychology and the life sciences takes an outdated cause-and-effect view of behaviour. This paradigm has remained the same since the early twentieth century - to understand how to predict and determine behaviour by manipulating environmental inputs to an organism. Within Robotics and AI this perspective manifests itself as the Computational Approach - computing actions and behaviours from predictive models.

Our radical concept of Perceptual Control represents a significant challenge to this way of thinking. It inverts, and subverts, current theories with the idea that behaviour is about controlling and maintaining how we perceive the world, at all levels of behaviour, and not about defining actions and behaviours. The consequence is that perceptions are our goals and actions are not. Our approach synergises perception, action, motivation and the environment into a single dynamic component of a multi-levelled, hierarchical system.

This novel and unique understanding of behaviour provides a simple and elegant solution to robotics that is radically distinct to conventional architectures and concepts. The theory questions 70 years of thought in Robotics and AI with the result that we need to return to square one and rebuild the field from the bottom up.

This paradigm has profound implications not only for our understanding of ourselves, but also for the application to artificial systems. This will lend a simplicity and dynamism unattainable if we retain the assumptions of the existing paradigm.
With this unique combination of novel approaches within the disciplines of both Psychology and Robotics we expect to establish a leading and game-changing paradigm which lays the foundations for a new future technology for robotics.
