We launched the platform in September 2017 at the 32,000-student CU Boulder. Students earn PIPs for riding the bus; bike, ride and car sharing; recycling, refilling water bottles, volunteering, taking fitness classes, joining student clubs, turning off cell data, saving and paying down student loans and more.

They can then turn their earned PIPs into real savings ($100s+) in valuable discounts on food, books, music, gear and fitness (with food discounts being by far the most popular). These are non-trivial benefits given the cost of healthy living in a college town, especially as it relates to food. I was surprised to learn recently how widespread food insecurity is on many college campuses, particularly community colleges and public universities.

They can also donate their PIPs, pay them forward and it will soon be possible for users to deposit their PIPs in escrow accounts that are usable only for school related expenses - loan repayment, registration fees, meal plans, etc. We’re lining up foundations and other funders to match what the students set aside for this purpose, preferably at a ratio greater than 1:1, so as to be meaningful.

The PIPs App is unique in that action verification is required before PIPs can be awarded. Data intelligence is gathered via API integration, beacons, sensors, QR codes, transaction reports. In many case - beacons on the bus, API integrations with Lyft or the bikeshare - communication is so seamless, a user can earn PIPs without having to take her phone out of her pocket.

We have already seen how the technology can easily integrate into a university platform, to drive, encourage and support the next generation of environmental stewards, while allowing the university and community partners to benefit through greater engagement, retention and increase of local consumption.
