Pollution Matters is a project that focuses in managing real time pollution and GNSS data to precisely calculate to how much particles we are exposed during our daily activities. To make the understanding of this data more accessible and easy, and to raise awareness of the problem that pollution represents, we translate it to smoked cigars.
Through Sentinel-2 and ground sensors data we developed a particle pollution real time model that, with machine learning, change its values every time there is new ground sensors data. The algorithms get better every time there's a new Sentinel image (5 days). With the GNSS data we can overlay the path of someone walking through the city with our model to obtain the quantity of particles that person has been exposed to.
We generate the model interpolating the Aerosol Optical Thickness data of Sentinel-2, that give us continuous data of all the city, but only once every 5 days, with the pollution ground sensors, that give us data of a single point...

We generate the model interpolating the Aerosol Optical Thickness data of Sentinel-2, that give us continuous data of all the city, but only once every 5 days, with the pollution ground sensors, that give us data of a single point but every 30/60 minutes. This process let us estimate the density of the particles (μg/m3) in our entire city in real time.
With the GNSS data we can acquire the location and the speed of the user, with the location we calculate the time exposed to a determinate amount of pollution and with the velocity we find the respiratory rate (volume of air aspirated per minute) to finally calculate the amount of pollution breathed (μg). We use the relation between breathed particles and cigars described in Richard & Elizabeth Muller 2015 paper (Air Pollution and Cigarette Equivalence) to ultimately translate the pollution data to cigars.
Our product and algorithms can offer help to governments and health and environment companies to enhance their customer experience.
