Rafode renewable energy program aims at providing affordable and good quality renewable energy products (Solar lamps) to rural population. The program overall goal is to provide solar lamps to rural households on credit to be repaid in installments for a predetermined period of time.This is in order to enable the rural household to have access to affordable lightening in their homes which will not be billed periodically as is the case with electricity main grid and which will not emit harmful gases as in the case with Kerosene.
The business objective and benefit is to eradicate the use of kerosene lamps in the rural areas in areas with low access to electricity, by providing the solar lamps on credit, this enables the most poor in the rural areas to access the product thereby addressing the problem of access and affordability. In rural areas the kerosene lamps have coursed deaths due to the users forgetting to put off the kerosene light and end up causing fire.
Rafode methodology is similar to PAYG schemes, it borrows the method of prepaid electricity. Rafode gives out loans to clients and the loans is used to purchase the solar lamps, the clients gets the solar while the loan is paid to the supplier.Rafode clients pays the loans in installments for a maximum of 12 months. Client payment is done through M-PESA. on weekly basis. Rafode clients do pay 10% deposit to access the product . the loans given range from $10 to $400. As the demand increases we are planning to increase the loan to $700 to accommodat increase in demand for solar that can be used for tv, ironing ,fridge and other basic household needs. Once the clients complete the payments, ownership of the product is transferre to them.
Rafode has entered into MOU with suppliers who supply the products , to ensure quality of the product, we only deal with products that have been certified by lightening Africa. Rafode reaches out to its clients through formation of community groups, this is done through awareness creation and community sensitization by our field officers.Rafode currently is serving over 1023 rural clients who have received loans for solar.In 2017 we are looking forward to double the number to over 2000 household clients reached with solar lamps.
